Private sector workers typically get 11 vacation days after one year, increasing with tenure. 32% don’t roll over unused days, and 28% don’t get paid for them. The U.S. is the only developed nation without mandated paid vacation.

To maximize vacation time, experts suggest grouping it with weekends and holidays. Business travelers may add vacation days to trips, and remote workers can leverage their flexibility for getaways. Pace vacation days throughout the year to prevent burnout, and strategically plan time off during busy periods at work for a more “refreshed” feeling. Set an “acceptable minimum” for taking time off, and unplug fully while on vacation for maximum relaxation.
