Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson in Manhattan, will fight extradition to New York from Pennsylvania. Mangione, denied bail, was arrested after a manhunt. His refusal to waive extradition could lead to a lengthy process, but he likely won’t prevent transfer, say legal experts.

Police found Mangione at a McDonald’s after an employee recognized him from surveillance images. Items in his possession matched those used by the shooter. Mangione faces gun and forgery charges in Pennsylvania and was arraigned in Altoona. In Manhattan, he faces murder and weapon charges.

Mangione, who suffered from chronic back pain, worked at TrueCar as a data engineer. He lived at a co-living community in Hawaii and underwent surgery on the mainland for back issues. His manifesto suggests a challenge to the healthcare industry’s corruption, according to police analysis.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, had a ghost gun and silencer at the time of his arrest. He also had a significant amount of cash and fake identifications matching those used by the gunman. His family expressed shock and devastation over his arrest and offered prayers for Thompson’s family.

Thompson’s murder sparked outrage among Americans struggling with healthcare costs. As CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance unit, he had a 20-year career with the company. The shooting occurred outside a midtown hotel where Thompson was attending an investor conference. Thompson, a father of two, was deliberately targeted.
