China’s smartphone market saw a 4.0% decline in shipments in the second quarter, with weaker consumer demand impacting top brands. Apple’s market share rose to 13.9% as Huawei reclaimed the top spot with 18.1% share. Xiaomi was the only brand to see growth, while Vivo faced a 10.1% decline.

Apple’s shipments declined 1.3% year-on-year to 9.6 million units in the second quarter, a smaller drop than the previous quarter. Price adjustments to specific iPhone models helped mitigate the decline. This marks Apple’s eighth consecutive quarter of decline in China’s smartphone market.

Huawei shipped 12.5 million phones in the second quarter, reclaiming the top spot after over four years. Xiaomi recorded growth in shipments, while Vivo faced a steep 10.1% decline. Overall, China’s smartphone shipments dropped as growth momentum from government subsidies subdued amid economic challenges.

IDC’s senior research analyst, Arthur Guo, highlighted ongoing challenges in the smartphone market due to subdued consumer confidence. He noted that a significant uplift in demand is unlikely in the near term, and the market will face a more complex landscape in the second half of the year.
