Joe Rogan discusses impact of AI on jobs and personal identity, concerns about emotional toll.
On the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Joe Rogan and Replit CEO Amjad Masad discussed the rise of AI, routine job loss, and the impact on personal identity tied to work. Rogan expressed concern about people’s sense of purpose as automation threatens to eliminate jobs.
Rogan highlighted the challenge for those whose work defines their identity and the psychological impact of sudden job loss. Masad noted that white-collar desk jobs are more vulnerable to automation in the short term due to the ease of automating formulaic computer tasks.
President Donald Trump advocates for a manufacturing comeback, but a Cato Institute survey found most Americans prefer more factory jobs for the country, not themselves. Manufacturing Institute Director Carolyn Lee emphasized modern manufacturing jobs require skills, certifications, and experience in software and robotics.
Despite optimism around reskilling, Rogan expressed concern about the emotional toll of job loss. Masad acknowledged the difficulty of retraining older workers and criticized the “learn to code” push for displaced workers. However, he sees an opportunity for computer-based workers to reskill using AI to automate tasks.
Rogan emphasized the human impact of losing manufacturing jobs, highlighting the emotional connection individuals have to their work. He cautioned that job loss is not just an economic issue but a personal one for those affected.
