Australian mining and metals company South32 is concerned about the future of its Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique due to potential power supply issues and uncertain power prices beyond March 2026. The company has been in talks with the primary power provider, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), to renew a power tariff set to expire in 2026. Drought conditions could impact HCB’s hydroelectric power generation capacity, leading to uncertainty in electricity supply to Mozal. Production guidance for the financial year 2026 is under review. South32 holds a 63.7% share in Mozal Aluminium, the largest private investment in Mozambique.
