Starbucks corporate employees are required to return to the office four days a week starting in October. CEO Brian Niccol announced a “one-time voluntary exit program with a cash payment” for those who prefer not to return for an additional day.
Under Niccol’s leadership, Starbucks has been working to reverse slumping U.S. sales. The strategy includes simplifying the menu, improving the coffee shop experience, and reducing service times to four minutes per drink.
Last year, Starbucks warned that workers who didn’t return to the office three days a week were at risk of being fired. In February, the company cut 1,100 jobs and said it wouldn’t fill open positions as part of the streamlining efforts.
Niccol, a California resident, wasn’t required to relocate to Seattle for work. The company established a remote office in Newport Beach for him. He primarily works in Seattle when not traveling.
