MrBeast, Jimmy Donaldson, to test Elon Musk’s X video promises

From Fortune:

Elon Musk’s wish has been granted as YouTube’s biggest star, MrBeast, has uploaded his first video on Twitter’s platform, X. But MrBeast has also pledged to share details of how much revenue the platform will pay out for the video, raising questions about the platform’s potential.

Despite previously stating that he wouldn’t move to X due to funding issues, MrBeast is now experimenting with the platform. The video in question, where he compares a $1 car to a $100,000,000 car, was reuploaded from YouTube to X to test the platform’s ad revenue potential. MrBeast will share ad revenue next week.

The uncertainty surrounding revenue payments on X is evident as MrBeast’s followers speculate how much money his post with 124 million views made. X’s payment policy is complex, allowing users to claim up to 97% of revenue after fees up to a threshold of $50,000 in lifetime earnings. Further caveats are laid out in the subscriptions creator terms, leaving uncertainty as to how much revenue creators can expect.

The success of big-name content creators like MrBeast on X is pivotal for Musk’s dream to pivot the platform into a “video-first” platform. However, skeptics say it’s too early to make such declarations, and advertisers leaving the platform in droves mean X’s revenue from operations has slumped to $2.5 billion in 2023, compared to almost $1 billion per quarter in 2022. Elon Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino may need to find a way to keep the platform afloat.
