Netflix’s ad-supported tier has reached 70 million global monthly active users two years after its launch. Over 50% of new sign-ups are for ad-supported plans. Netflix now has a total of 282.7 million memberships across all pricing tiers. The company will shift focus towards revenue and other financial metrics next year.

Netflix recently reported adding 5.1 million subscribers in the third quarter, surpassing Wall Street estimates. The company sold out its ad inventory for two National Football League games on Christmas Day. FanDuel and Verizon are onboard as advertisers for the games, with FanDuel becoming the exclusive pregame sportsbook betting partner.

Media companies are embracing ad-supported strategies for streaming services, attracting customers with cheaper plans and advertising revenue. Netflix’s ad-supported tier had 40 million users in May, nearly doubling from earlier figures. The company plans to launch its own advertising platform in the U.S. by the end of the second quarter next year and globally by 2025.
