In 2024, more than 50 million retired workers will receive Social Security benefits, and these changes will affect millions of Americans who aren’t retired yet. The annual cost-of-living adjustment for the year was announced to be 3.2%, below 2023’s 8.7% increase. The payroll taxable maximum will increase to $168,600 in 2024, affecting people who earn $200,000 or more from 11.9% of U.S. households. The earnings limit for people who claim retirement benefits before their full retirement age and continue to work increases to $22,320 for 2024, affecting a potentially sizable number of people.
