Amazon’s Prime Video to start showing ads on Jan. 29
From Dow Jones & Company:
Amazon’s Prime Video subscribers will start seeing limited advertisements with movies and TV shows starting Jan. 29. Amazon stated that showing ads will allow them to continue to invest in compelling content and increase that investment over time. Subscribers can pay an additional $2.99 a month to continue seeing commercial-free programming.
Prime Video’s ad-supported plan is priced at $14.99, which is about double compared to rival ad-supported plans such as Netflix’s $6.99 and Disney+ with ads at $7.99. In 2022, Amazon spent about $16.6 billion on streaming content, including licensing and production costs. Amazon announced in September that it would be adding commercials in the new year, but did not announce a starting date at the time.
In October, Amazon’s third-quarter profit was reported at $9.9 billion with revenue swelling to $143.1 billion, exceeding analysts’ expectations. Amazon shares have jumped about 83% year to date.
