EXCLUSIVE-Two U.S. senators call for Tesla recalls after Reuters investigation
From Nasdaq:
Two U.S. senators are urging Elon Musk to recall any Tesla steering and suspension parts that pose a safety risk, in light of a Reuters investigation revealing Tesla’s concealment of vehicle safety flaws. Musk and Tesla have not yet responded to the senators’ letter, which calls for correcting “false and misleading” representations made to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Reuters investigation found that Tesla has frequently blamed drivers for failures of known defective vehicle parts, despite tracking frequent failures of these parts in customer cars. Tesla’s apparent attempts to shift responsibility for substandard vehicle quality to its customers and its arguments made to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are seen as troubling and unacceptable by the senators who have penned a letter to Musk about the matter.
Following media publication of the article, Tesla posted a response to the Reuters investigation on Musk’s social media platform challenging the article’s headline and refuting some of the allegations. The automaker claimed the article contained “incomplete and demonstrably incorrect information” and insisted it is truthful and transparent in its communications with regulators.
Sweden’s Transport Agency has joined Norway in investigating suspension failures in Tesla cars, while the U.S. senators have previously raised concerns about Tesla’s marketing practices and the safety of its automated driving technology. In the past, they have questioned Musk about internal communications among Tesla employees sharing private recordings from customers’ car cameras.
