From CNBC: ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ domestic box office opening

From CNBC:

Jason Momoa, Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” made a disappointing splash at the domestic box office with a $28.1 million opening weekend, the fourth-lowest in the history of the DC Extended Universe. This was lower than the film was projected to earn and significantly below the first “Aquaman” film’s $67.8 million debut weekend earnings in 2018.

The film did, however, pick up $80.1 million internationally, bringing its global total to $120 million. Nevertheless, the performance of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” reflects the struggles of the DC Extended Universe in recent years and its lack of connection to future DC projects following an announced reboot in 2025.

Despite these challenges, the film faces limited competition in theaters next week and could benefit from the upcoming holidays, with parents seeking out entertainment for their children’s school vacations. Expert analysis points out that late December releases like “Aquaman 2” often attract audiences throughout the holiday season and into the new year.
