From Fortune Magazine: NORAD joint military command tracks Santa Claus’ path
From Fortune Magazine:
The military’s North American Aerospace Defense Command is using radar, sensors, and aircraft to track Santa’s journey around the world on Christmas Eve. They are providing reports on Santa’s movements for kids to follow, and have launched apps and websites with games, movies, and music related to Santa. The military uses its everyday technology to follow Santa’s journey and says it’s able to track the light from Rudolph’s nose. The tradition of tracking Santa began in 1955 when the commander on duty at NORAD’s predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command, fielded a call from a child who thought she was reaching Santa. Now, NORAD has a dedicated operations center with volunteers who answer calls and provide updates on Santa’s location. They expect around 1,100 volunteers to help answer calls this year. The operations center is open until midnight MST on Christmas Eve, and people can call 1-877 HI-NORAD to talk directly to NORAD staff members for updates on Santa’s exact location.
