From Fortune Magazine: Tencent, Netease wipeout on gaming curbs followed by China approving 105 online video games

From Fortune Magazine:

Chinese press and publications authority approved 105 new online games, showing support for the industry. The National Press and Publication Administration issued a statement on its WeChat social media account expressing that the Game Working Committee of China Music and Digital Association has given positive signals to support the online game industry. This comes after last week’s proposed curbs caused major losses for investors in Tencent and NetEase. The administration said that in 2023, 1,075 game version numbers had been issued, of which 977 were domestically produced and 98 were imported.

The guidelines of the administration propose restrictions including the banning of offering incentives for daily log-ins or purchases, limiting user recharging limits, and issuing warnings for irrational consumption behavior. In 2021, the Chinese regulators limited the amount of time children could spend playing games to three hours a week. Although approvals of new games were suspended for eight months in 2021, it resumed in April 2022 upon China’s easing of a broader crackdown on the technology industry.
