From Fortune: Meet the seniors who saved up $20,000 to ditch work and travel the world

From Fortune:

Sandy Hazelip and Ellie Hamby, two 82-year-old women, have embarked on a whirlwind trip around the world, documenting their adventures on TikTok to their 63,000-plus followers. Their journey was initially inspired by Phileas Fogg’s 80-day journey around the world, but the pandemic delayed their plans. However, they finally embarked on their 80-day trip at 81, and with a new slogan, “Around the world in 80 days at 81, and still on the run.”

The pair, who first met on a medical mission 23 years ago, quickly became best friends and travel companions. They forewent luxury stays and lounging by the beach, opting for adventurous travel over vacation. Most of their $20,000 budget went towards international flights, and they describe themselves as “second class travelers.”

Their affordable travel style has allowed them to explore cities more affordably and enjoy spontaneity. While they initially posted their adventures on TikTok for their friends, their journey touched a larger audience and their friendship has attracted a younger audience looking to experience similar bonds and travels. As they head into 2024, they plan to keep traveling, with a 30-day South America trip on the horizon.
