From Fortune: New York Times sues OpenAI and Microsoft for training their AI using its articles and causing publishers billions of dollars in damages

From Fortune:

The New York Times filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI for using millions of copyrighted articles to train AI chatbots and other features, alleging that the action has caused billions of dollars in damages. The publishers attempted to reach an agreement, but it was unsuccessful. This is the first lawsuit by a major media organization challenging the practice and will likely take years to resolve, as OpenAI has multiple ongoing lawsuits with content producers.

OpenAI is currently in talks with investors for new financing and could be valued at $100 billion. In response to the lawsuit, a New York Times spokesperson stated that if Microsoft and OpenAI wanted to use their work for commercial purposes, they should have first obtained permission to do so, which they failed to do. Microsoft’s share prices have risen 55% since the debut of ChatGPT in November 2022, which has increased its market capitalization to $2.8 trillion.
