From NBC Universal: Barbie, Oppenheimer, Taylor Swift: 2023’s most important films
From NBC Universal:
The 2023 movie industry has experienced resurgence with $8.8 billion in ticket sales. Strong performances from “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and Taylor Swift’s filmed Eras Tour concert all contributed to the comeback of box office sales. Films such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” helped generate $1.5 billion at the domestic box office and $3.7 billion globally. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” reached $574.9 million domestically. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s concert film generated $180 million domestically and $250 million worldwide. To capitalize on its animation films’ success at the box office, Universal is set to release “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Despicable Me 4” in 2024.
Additionally, Angel Studios, using a Kickstarter-style method of generating funds, released “Sound of Freedom,” a movie that overshot its $14.5 million budget to reach $250 million worldwide. Angel Studios further plans to release “Cabrini” and “Bonhoeffer” in 2024. Finally, it’s important to note that Swift’s distribution partner was AMC, and her film bypassing Hollywood studios to strike a deal with the theater chain, an unprecedented move.
