Google Settles $5 Bln Privacy Breach Lawsuit

From Nasdaq:

Google has agreed to a $5 billion settlement in a privacy lawsuit accusing it of tracking users’ browsing activity in incognito mode. The plaintiffs sought at least $5,000 per user for privacy violations. They claim Google breached privacy by gathering personal data, which the tech giant denies. A trial is set for February 5, 2024.

The lawsuit names William Byatt from Florida and Chasom Brown and Maria Nguyen from California as the plaintiffs, who say Google tracked their potentially embarrassing browsing data. Google maintained it was transparent about data collection in incognito mode. The judge rejected Google’s attempt to dismiss the lawsuit due to unclear privacy statements.

A trial is scheduled for February 5, 2024, after lawyers reached a preliminary settlement. The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, but the lawyers have reached an agreement through mediation. They plan to present a formal settlement agreement before the court by February 24, 2024.
