The 2023 holiday season has been disappointing for Hollywood, with box office receipts barely crossing $1 billion. This is lower than the past two years and less than half the average for the pre-pandemic years of 2015 to 2019. The lack of mega-blockbusters like “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” contributed to the industry’s struggles. Hollywood is facing a painful reckoning at the box office, with 2023 not showing signs of improvement.
