Many, like writer Anastasia Selby, have been forced to leave expensive cities like Seattle for more affordable ones, such as Tallahassee. In Los Angeles, Emily Blake and her husband make just over $100,000 combined and are living paycheck to paycheck in their rent-controlled apartment, unable to afford a home in the city. Those like Jacob Fuerst and his wife, who moved from North Carolina to New Hampshire, are also struggling to find an affordable home in the current housing market, despite a combined annual income of around $200,000. Signs of hope include recent drops in mortgage rates, though the overall market remains weak.
