‘I feel slighted’: My husband and I are in our 70s. We married 3 years ago. He’s leaving his $1.8 million home to a 10-year-old relative. Is that normal?

A 73-year-old woman writes to MarketWatch advice columnist Quentin Fottrell about her concerns regarding her husband’s inheritance plans and their living expenses. Although she covers two-thirds of their living expenses due to having a higher income, her husband’s home will be passed on to a 10-year-old relative who is his heir on the grounds that the child can carry on the family name. The wife wonders if she should simply accept the situation, given that she has already made provisions for her husband. Fottrell advises that there is no “normal” resolution given their late-in-life marriage, but suggests that either both should get to use each other’s properties for the duration of their life, or they should make alternative plans for the properties after death.
