India’s govt demanded Apple soften impact of hack warnings -Washington Post

From Nasdaq:

Apple warned Indian opposition politicians that government hackers may have targeted their phones, stirring a demand from PM Modi’s administration to soften the message, per The Washington Post. Representatives from Apple were also called in to help weaken the warnings’ impact. The opposition accuses Modi’s government of attempting to hack their phones.

In response to the warnings, Apple did not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker. This came after the Indian opposition lawmakers shared screenshots on social media, showing a notification from Apple that they were being targeted by state-sponsored attackers. The situation prompted accusations from the opposition that the Indian government was trying to hack their phones.

Apple’s warnings in October to Indian opposition politicians that government hackers may have hacked their phones prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration to quickly demand the U.S. firm soften its message, per a report from the Washington Post. This involved the administration calling Apple India representatives to help weaken the political impact of the warnings and also pressing an Apple security expert from overseas for alternative explanations.
