McDonald’s Malaysia has sued the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement for making false and defamatory statements that it says hurt its business, seeking damages of 6 million ringgit ($1.31 million). The movement targeted Western fast-food brands in Muslim countries like Malaysia for their ties to Israel amid the military offensive in Gaza.

Gerbang Alaf Restaurants, the licencee of McDonald’s in Malaysia, is suing BDS Malaysia for social media postings linking the fast-food franchise to Israel’s “genocidal war against Palestinians in Gaza,” causing a loss of profit and job cuts. McDonald’s Malaysia confirmed the lawsuit to protect its rights and interests, while BDS Malaysia denied defaming the company.

The BDS movement aims to end international support for Israel’s “oppression of Palestinians” and pressure Israel to comply with international law. Malaysia, a majority-Muslim country, is a staunch supporter of the Palestinians, leading to boycott campaigns targeting companies with ties to Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
