Apple Embraces Change: iOS 17.4 Beta Introduces App Sideloading — But Only For EU Users

Apple Inc. introduces app sideloading in iOS 17.4 exclusively for EU users, in response to EU Digital Markets Act. New OS includes App Marketplaces for third-party app stores outside App Store, with strict rules. Minimum €1 million credit required for third-party app store creators. Sideload eligibility checks include billing address, location, device classification.

Apple can update list of countries for sideloading at any time. While changes align with EU’s DMA, JP Morgan predicts minimal impact on App Store revenue, as the EU accounts for only 6% of revenue. New fifty-cent fee expected to offset commission cuts. EU commission reduced from 30% to 17%.

Apple to use beta testing to check if a device is eligible for sideloading or not. regulatory changes won’t significantly affect Apple’s App Store. Apple claims it will not be affected by EU regulatory changes. No changes in sideloading for locations other than the EU despite changes in profits.
