A powerful earthquake in central Japan killed at least six people, with many trapped under collapsed buildings, and damaged structures and utility lines. The 7.6 magnitude quake triggered meter-high waves on the western seaboard and caused a regional airport to close. The US President offered assistance, and tens of thousands evacuated to emergency shelter. Thousands remain without power, and Japan’s Emperor and Empress’s New Year’s appearance was canceled. Despite concerns for nuclear plant safety, no issues have been found at active reactors following the earthquake.
