Baltimore homicides fall under 300 per year after historic 20% drop in 2023

1. Baltimore records less than 300 homicides last year, ending a surge of gun violence that began in 2015 after the death of Freddie Gray sparked civil unrest and calls for police reform.
2. The city has seen a 20% annual decrease in homicides, suggesting the city’s ongoing anti-violence efforts are working.
3. Mayor Brandon Scott credits comprehensive violence strategy and court-ordered police reform measures as factors contributing to the decrease in homicides.
4. Nonfatal shootings also decreased about 7% last year.
5. 45% of Baltimore’s homicide cases were solved in 2023.
6. City and federal law enforcement leaders are targeting Baltimore’s most violent offenders, also seizing illegal guns and dismantling drug trafficking organizations.
7. While the numbers are promising, city officials and community leaders say more needs to be done to meet the needs of young Black men from Baltimore’s poorest neighborhoods.
8. Family members of victims say the progress is still insufficient.
