Gen Z is making strides in homeownership despite mounting affordability challenges. A study found that over a quarter of Gen Zers aged 19-25 owned a home in 2023. They’re even outpacing the homeownership rates of Gen Xers and millennials at the same age. Cities in the Midwest and South offer advantages for young homebuyers. Redfin also pointed out that older members of Gen Z haven’t fared as well as the younger adults in their generation in terms of buying homes. Analysts expect affordability to improve for Gen Z as mortgage rates, rents and home price growth cool.
The top 10 metropolitan areas where it could be easier for Gen Zers to become homeowners are Fort Wayne, Indiana, Corpus Christi, Texas, Detroit, Michigan, Laredo, Texas, Memphis, Tennessee, Lincoln, Nebraska, Durham, North Carolina, Fort Worth, Texas, Aurora, Colorado, and Scottsdale, Arizona.
