Best town for first-time home buyers is in upstate New York — and not Buffalo

From Dow Jones & Company:

The housing market in the upstate New York town of Irondequoit ranked as the top spot for 2024’s best housing markets based on affordability, expected home price appreciation, and commute times. The median listing price is $187,000, far below the national median. However, low inventory is an issue, with homes being snapped up after 27 days, an average of 34 days below the national average. The area’s affordability and attractions have led to increased popularity with buyers from the Northeast. Rochester and nearby Syracuse are expecting a large demand for housing due to the expected creation of 50,000 jobs thanks to a nearby semiconductor-fabrication facility. Low inventory has caused many homeowners with low-interest loans to be reluctant to sell, pushing home prices to increase. The lock-in effect has forced many potential home sellers to put off selling. Other promising markets for first-time buyers in 2024 include Benton, Ark.; Winterset, Iowa; and Newington, Conn.
