Biden delay on gas export proposals called ‘win for Russia’

From Fortune Magazine:

President Joe Biden has announced a pause in considering new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals as the 2024 presidential election approaches. The move is aimed at addressing climate change and countering concerns over potentially catastrophic planet-warming emissions, aligning with Biden’s pledge to cut climate pollution.

LNG, or liquefied natural gas, is created by cooling natural gas to a liquid state for safer transport. The gas is then reheated upon arrival and distributed to consumers, power plants, and industrial users. U.S. LNG exports have surged, particularly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, positioning the U.S. as a key geopolitical influence.

Biden’s pause in considering new LNG export terminals aims to update the evaluation process to avoid diminished domestic energy availability, weakened security or economy, and environmental impact. No immediate effect on gas supplies to Europe or Asia is expected, but it could delay pending LNG projects and is set to take several months.

Environmentalists and Democrats have hailed Biden’s decision, citing concerns over pollution, climate crisis exacerbation, and elevated energy prices for U.S. families and businesses. Conversely, industry groups and Republicans have condemned the pause, arguing that it favors Russia, threatens U.S. jobs, and undermines global climate progress.

The move is anticipated to influence the 2024 presidential race, with Biden seeking to regain support from young voters disenchanted by his previous energy and military decisions, while Republicans portray the decision as radical and detrimental to America’s economic and national security.
