Biden says 3 U.S. service members killed in drone attack by Iran-backed militia in Jordan
From Fortune:
Three American service members were killed and “many” were wounded in a drone strike in Jordan attributed to Iran-backed militia groups. The incident marked the first U.S. fatalities in months in attacks on American forces across the Middle East. Biden said, “the United States will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing.”
The U.S. fatalities occurred amid an increase in strikes on American forces across the Middle East by Iranian-backed militias. Although U.S. officials were still working to identify the specific group responsible, one of several Iranian-backed groups was assessed to be responsible. Jordan was silent and awaiting further developments.
The U.S. intervention was urgent, as 25 service members were injured in addition to the three killed. Their usual base characterized the U.S. military involvement in Jordan, where around 3,000 American troops are typically stationed.
Jordanian state television said the attack took place outside of Jordan, but the exact location was not initially clear. Conflict in Syria have long been a cause for tension in the region.
U.S. troops have faced several attacks on their bases since Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip begun. The attack on Jordan was of note because it marked the first targeting of American troops in the kingdom during the war in Gaza.
Biden, who was in Columbia, South Carolina, on Sunday, was briefed by top officials on the situation. Iraq and Syria have Iranian-backed forces as well, and the situation in Syria is particularly complicated due to the ongoing civil war there.
Jordan is a crucial power and ally to the United States, but also has been implicated in strikes within the region. There was suspicion that the attack happened across the border in Syria, where Jordan is suspected of launching airstrikes.
