Biden: ‘We do not support independence’ for Taiwan
From Fortune:
President Joe Biden said the US did not support Taiwan’s independence after the Democratic Progressive Party, which seeks to limit China’s influence, won a third term. China hoped Taiwan’s vice president, Lai Ching-te, wouldn’t be elected. However, the US supports Taiwan’s democratic system and plans to maintain peace and stability with China.
The US has traditionally maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan and pledged defense assistance to the island. However, Biden’s suggestion of potential military intervention if China invades Taiwan has strained US-China relations. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the US commitment to cross-Strait peace and stability following the election.
House Speaker Mike Johnson plans to send a delegation to Taiwan after Lai’s inauguration in May. He is showing a strong US support for Taiwan through personal diplomacy. This visit would mark a significant show of support from the US for Taiwan and the current administration.
