Boston Children’s Researchers, in Joint Effort, Deploy AI Across Their Hip Clinic to Support Patients, Doctors
From NVIDIA:
Boston Children’s Hospital has deployed a fully automated AI tool called VirtualHip, which creates 3D models of hips from routine medical images. Developed using the NVIDIA DGX platform, the tool helps clinicians diagnose and treat hip disorders among adolescents and young adults. Clinicians can log in to the tool through a web-based portal, view and interact with 3D simulations, and receive results within an hour.
The VirtualHip project was developed using natural language processing models and computer vision algorithms to process tens of millions of clinical notes and imaging data from patients seen at BCH over the past two decades. This enabled the tool to offer patient-specific risk assessment and treatment planning by comparing current patients to previously treated ones with similar demographic backgrounds. The hardware support from NVIDIA DGX made this possible.
In addition to helping clinicians with diagnosis and treatment planning, VirtualHip also helps patients better understand their condition. Using a 3D model, doctors can show patients exactly where the joints are impinging or unstable, helping to improve patient compliance with treatment. The project is continuously being developed, with plans to commercialize the product for use in other hospitals.
The BCH researchers working on the VirtualHip project hope to create a patient-facing platform for personalized analyses and treatment recommendations using large language models and generative AI. They also plan to commercialize the product for use in other hospitals.
