China accuses U.S. immigration of harassing Chinese students

From Fortune:

Chinese students have been facing increased scrutiny at U.S. entry points. According to Chinese Ambassador in Washington, Xie Feng, valid visa holders have faced hours of questioning, had their electronics checked, and have been forcibly deported from the country.

The number of foreign students in the U.S. could be impacted. Nearly 290,000 Chinese students are studying in the U.S., making up a third of the country’s foreign students. China has over 1.3 million students studying abroad.

Chinese students have faced long interrogations, entry bans, and deportation since November. This affects the academic and psychological well-being of international students.

The Chinese government has protested the treatment of Chinese students at U.S. ports of entry. It says the actions violate an agreement made by U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in November 2023.
