China says the U.S. has ‘weaponized’ chip export controls
From CNBC:
China’s Ministry of Commerce accuses the U.S. of weaponizing export controls and interfering in high-tech exports to China by Dutch companies. Spokesperson Shu Jueting urges the Dutch side to support compliant trade and respect the spirit of the contract. ASML, a key manufacturer of lithography machines, was restricted from exporting to China by the Dutch government.
The U.S. and Dutch government’s export restrictions add to the ongoing high-tech trade war with China. ASML’s statement revealed that discussions with the U.S. government uncovered certain lithography tools are covered under October export rules. China has strongly opposed these moves and promises to protect their business interests by taking necessary measures.
Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao expressed concern to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo about U.S. restrictions on third-party exports of lithography machines to China. The ongoing tensions in high-tech exports and sanctions against Chinese companies are the focus of the U.S.-China commerce talks. The U.S. Department of Commerce did not respond immediately to a comment request.
