A Bay Area commuter train derailed and caught fire Monday, injuring several passengers. Orinda Station will be closed while crews remove cars and inspect tracks. The derailment will likely affect tens of thousands of New Year’s Day travelers, officials said. It’s not clear what caused the derailment about 8 miles northeast of Oakland.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit train had left Orinda when the front two cars derailed, sparking flames and a chain of events that injured several passengers. Officials said it’s not yet clear what caused the derailment but service was immediately stopped for a 12-mile stretch 8 miles northeast of Oakland.
All passengers on board were safely evacuated, but several suffered minor injuries. A large portion of service has been cancelled for the rest of the day.Officials estimated that tens of thousands would be impacted by the disruption. No details were given on when service would be restored.
