Consumer Sector Update for 01/12/2024: UAL, DAL, LUV, TSLA, DIS

Consumer stocks were mixed on Friday, with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) inching up by 0.1%, while the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) fell by 1%. In corporate news, major airlines such as United (UAL), Delta (DAL), and Southwest (LUV) experienced declines of 9.8%, 8.2%, and 4.8% respectively due to flight cancellations from a winter storm.

Tesla’s (TSLA) factory near Berlin will halt car production for nearly two weeks due to supply chain issues caused by tensions in the Middle East, resulting in a 3.5% decline in Tesla shares. Meanwhile, Disney’s (DIS) Pixar Animation Studios is planning staff cuts after completing production, leading to a 1.3% rise in Disney’s shares.
