DAOs Are Not the Next Home for Online Extremism

From Nasdaq:

The Wired article claims that DAOs could become a hub for online extremism, giving neo-Nazis and jihadists a platform to organize and spread their ideologies. The author, Julia Ebner, studied extremist groups like Les Identitaires and Reconquista Germanica, finding that many use Discord, a US-based platform that allows courts to issue subpoenas to access user data. This may make organizations like Reconquista Germanica and the Redacted Club DAO, another right-coded group, easier targets for law enforcement.

The article speculates on the potential consequences if extremist groups began using DAOs to launch election interference campaigns, potentially disrupting democratic institutions and challenging the rule of law. While DAOs are designed to manage smart contracts and make decisions, they aren’t focused on communication. Even when voting occurs, discussions are typically public and monitored. It is unlikely that DAOs would be effective tools for spreading propaganda, given their focus on financial and computer science issues.
