Donald Glover brings ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ back on the screen
From Nasdaq:
A new TV reboot of the movie “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” will premiere on Prime Video next month. The series, created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, features two outsiders who land jobs at an international spy agency and get paired up in a cover marriage. The show is a reimagining of the characters from the 2005 film.
The new series has a lot in common with the movie, but also introduces different elements. The creators aimed to make something different from the original film. The show’s writing team drew inspiration from 70s movies and modern-day reality TV, with the series focusing on the relationship and love story between the two characters.
The showrunner of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” penned an open letter to “internet trolls” who questioned the need for the remake. She acknowledged that there are many remakes out there, but emphasizes that the creators have tried to make something different.
The series, which streams on Prime Video from February 2nd, will follow the characters as they complete missions in glamorous locations and begin to develop feelings for one another. The show’s co-creators describe it as a love story and a show aimed at connecting with lonely individuals.
Donald Glover, who also releases music under the name Childish Gambino, said he wanted to make a show about relationships, as he has entered a point in his life where relationship talk has become a focus. The show will feature eight episodes and showcase John and Jane Smith adapting to sharing their daily lives with a stranger.
As the married couple partake in a peculiar selection process to land jobs at an international spy agency, they must convince their new superiors, and each other, of their spy skills, while adapting to a cover marriage. The new TV series is a reimagining of the 2005 film featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and will premiere on Prime Video from February 2nd.
