Elon Musk on first human Neuralink implant: patient ‘recovering well’

From fortune.com:

The first human has received an implant from Elon Musk’s company Neuralink. Musk, the billionaire co-founder of Neuralink, announced on Twitter that the patient is “recovering well” and hinted at promising results. The implant aims to link the nervous system to computers, with more than 40 similar trials worldwide. The U.S. FDA has approved the clinical study.

The Neuralink device, about the size of a large coin, is implanted in the skull with ultra-thin wires going directly into the brain. The goal is to allow people to control a computer using their thoughts alone. Musk also announced a product called “Telepathy” that would enable users to control their phones or computers just by thinking. The safety and effectiveness of these devices need to be evaluated over time.

This development puts Neuralink in a “rather small group” of companies with human implants. However, the long-term success and safety of the device have yet to be measured. Clinical trials aim to collect data on the safety and effectiveness of the implant. The true success will depend on the benefits and stability to the participant over time. There’s currently “insufficient information” to determine the safety of the procedure.
