Elon Musk’s Neuralink implants brain chip in first human By Reuters
From Investing.com:
The first human patient has received an implant from brain-chip startup Neuralink, according to a post by founder Elon Musk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the company to conduct its first human trial of the implant last year, a crucial step in helping patients with paralysis and neurological conditions. The study uses a robot to place a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant. Neuralink said its goal is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.
Neuralink’s PRIME Study is a trial for its wireless brain-computer interface to evaluate the safety of the implant and surgical robot. The company has faced scrutiny over safety protocols, recently being fined for violating U.S. Department of Transportation rules. Despite an initial valuation of $5 billion, an investigation was requested to determine if Musk had misled investors about the technology’s safety. Veterinary records showed problems with the implants on monkeys, including paralysis, seizures, and brain swelling, prompting concerns about the safety of the implants. Musk stated that “terminal” monkeys were used to minimize risk to healthy ones.
