Even Cloudflare’s CEO says that viral firing video is ‘painful’

From Dow Jones & Company:

Tech employee’s recording of her firing from Cloudflare has sparked a debate on the right way to let employees go. In the video, Brittany Pietsch logs into a virtual meeting where she is informed that she’s not meeting performance expectations and will be let go. Pietsch asks for an explanation, and the company reps cannot provide specifics on her performance. Cloudflare defended its decision, stating that it does performance reviews regularly and parts ways with those who don’t meet measurable targets. Company CEO admitted they made a mistake and that managers should always be involved in termination meetings. The video has gone viral and drawn criticism from viewers.

Pietsch gave her response on LinkedIn, explaining that she asked questions during the meeting to seek clarity on why she was singled out for termination. Experts emphasize that it’s important to treat affected employees with respect and dignity, no matter the reason for their termination. However, recording layoff meetings can be risky and may be illegal in some states. Despite the backlash, Pietsch is not concerned about future job prospects. Cloudflare has numerous job postings for open positions, including sales roles.
