Founders of Wise and Skype raise $436 million to back Europe tech

From CNBC:

Plural, the founders of Wise, Skype and Songkick, has raised 400 million euros for a new fund to back technology startups in Europe. The second fund arrives just 18 months after the firm raised its last fund. The partners like Ian Hogarth and Taavet Hinrikus are all former founders and active angel investors, aiming to compete with established funds in Europe.

Plural plans to invest 2-3 times per year with its new fund. It has backed 27 companies in total, focusing on AI, frontier technology, and climate and energy. The firm is interested in deep tech and solving fundamental scientific problems around energy, AI, and healthcare. The goal is to identify and build technology giants in Europe with major technological breakthroughs.

Carina Namih, a partner at Plural, anticipates major technology names emerging in Europe in the near future. She believes new players can dominate entirely new spaces that didn’t exist a year ago, attributing this possibility to key developments around AI and more established capital pools. Plural’s new fund adds to the wave of startup activity in Europe in the last decade.
