Harvard’s president to quit amid intense backlash over her response to antisemitism and plagiarism allegations, school newspaper says

Claudine Gay is resigning as president of Harvard University after a brief and tumultuous tenure, which included allegations of plagiarism and a campus controversy over antisemitism. This is a dramatic about-face from her acclaimed July start as Harvard’s first Black president. Gay’s departure underscores the furor on campus with an attack by Hamas on Israel, and attention will likely shift to Harvard Corp. for their response regarding the accusations of plagiarism. Clubhouse President Marc Tessier-Lavigne announced his resignation from Stanford University amid scrutiny of his scientific work that began with reports in a student newspaper. In backing Gay on Dec. 12, Harvard Corp. said it had found “a few instances of inadequate citation” in her work as a political scientist and no violation of Harvard’s research standards. However, on Dec. 20, Harvard stated it had found two more examples of “duplicative language without appropriate attribution.” Gay was a professor at Harvard and a scholar of political behavior.
