How to Lower Your Tax Bill With the Charitable-Donation Deduction

The 2017 tax overhaul has led to a significant drop in the number of taxpayers deducting charitable contributions, with only about 12 million itemizing these donations in 2021 compared to 37 million in 2017. This decline is largely due to the expansion of the standard deduction, which has made it less advantageous for taxpayers to itemize deductions on Schedule A. Temporary pandemic-related changes, such as expanded tax deductions for very large and very small charitable donations, have also expired at the end of 2021. As a result, fewer taxpayers are able to benefit from these deductions.
