From Dow Jones & Company:
A recent study from Tulane University with data from over 450,000 adult participants found that climbing more than five flights of stairs per day can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 20%. This exercise has benefits such as a reduced risk for metabolic syndrome and injury prevention in older individuals. The Blue Zones studies also showed that steeper terrains correlated with improved longevity. Taking the stairs rather than the elevator or escalator is an accessible way to incorporate steep walking into daily activity, with options to get started in the home and in public transportation settings like subway or bus stations. Additionally, using a treadmill with an incline can help get the benefits of steep climbing without the strain on the joints and hips. Add hills to your daily walks or hikes to improve endurance.
