In-N-Out Oakland restaurant forced to close due to crime wave

From Fortune:

In-N-Out Burger has announced plans to close its only Oakland location due to a wave of crime. The fast-food restaurant has been hit by car break-ins, robberies, property damage, and theft. The closure comes after repeated efforts to improve safety, which were unsuccessful.

The restaurant was located in a busy corridor near Oakland International Airport and the Coliseum, attracting many travelers and sports fans. This area has been plagued by crime, with over 1,300 incidents reported since 2019. These include robberies, burglaries, car break-ins, and other criminal activities.

Many have witnessed the prevalence of crime in the area, with reports of people being robbed at gunpoint in the drive-thru lane. The decision to close the location has attracted attention from local officials, including Mayor Sheng Thao, who has assigned more police officers to the area and implemented surveillance cameras.

Statistics provided by the mayor’s office show that efforts to combat crime in the area have seen some success, with decreases in car break-ins and thefts at the end of 2023. However, the situation remains a cause for concern, and further action is needed to address the ongoing criminal activity.

In-N-Out Burger is based in Irvine, California, and the decision to close its first-ever location is a rare move for the company. The closure will take effect on March 24, and the company cited the safety of both customers and employees as the primary reason for this decision.
