Johnson & Johnson settles opioid crisis lawsuit with Washington state for $149.5 million

The Washington state attorney general settles with Johnson & Johnson in a $149.5 million case over the opioid crisis. The deal must be approved by a judge. Under the settlement with Johnson & Johnson, the state and local governments will spend $123.3 million to address the opioid crisis. Drugmakers, wholesalers, pharmacy chains, and consultants have agreed to pay $50 billion so far to state and local governments to settle claims that they contributed to the opioid crisis. Johnson & Johnson said in a written statement that its actions relating to marketing and promoting important prescription opioid medications were appropriate and responsible. Senators welcomed the funds from the lawsuit will go to local governments and communities and quiz the drug company’s contribution to the opioid crisis. In 2020, the attorney general sued Johnson & Johnson, alleging that it helped drive the pharmaceutical industry’s expansion of prescription opioids.
