Kansas City Chiefs and Royals want local residents to fund their stadiums, but a county politician vetoed the plan
From Fortune Media IP Limited:
Jackson County Executive Frank White vetoed a proposed ordinance for a 3/8th-cent sales tax renewal to fund sports stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, citing the $2 billion cost to residents and lack of clear commitment from the teams. Four county legislators agree with the veto, and the County Legislature may override before the Jan. 23 deadline.
The Royals and Chiefs, who want to use the tax for a new downtown ballpark and renovations to Arrowhead Stadium, issued a statement respecting the veto and pushing for the measure to be on the April 2 ballot. As current leases expire in 2031, both teams are eager to press for approval.
County legislators voted 8-1 on Jan. 8 to approve the ballot language for the new sales tax, despite White’s hesitation, who wanted more concessions from the teams. They are facing a deadline to decide on the stadium tax renewal, as the teams are eager for approval and eyeing April for the measure.
