Looking to avoid COVID infection? Your diet could help, according to a new study
From Fortune Magazine:
A recent study suggested that those following a primarily plant-based diet may be 39% less likely to contract COVID-19 when compared to those who consume meat regularly. Although the diet doesn’t affect the severity of symptoms, it might be helpful in preventing COVID-19 all together. Experts concluded that “a plant-based diet may be considered for protection against infection with COVID-19.”
This conclusion, although observational, may have been drawn from the idea that those following a diet rich in vegetables, legumes, and nuts are less likely to be overweight or obese. They are also less likely to have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and are more likely to have a regular physical activity routine. This could potentially reduce the likelihood of infection, the severity of symptoms, and extreme outcomes like hospitalization and death.
Two other studies from BMJ publications in 2021 have come to similar conclusions. Front-line healthcare workers from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US who followed plant-based diets had a 73% lower risk of developing a moderate-to-severe case of COVID. Another study found that a diet high in healthy plant-based foods appeared to lower the risk and severity of COVID infection.
