Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized President Biden’s decision to pause LNG exports, calling it an attack on America’s natural gas industry. The Department of Energy stated that the pause was necessary to evaluate the public interest and environmental impact of LNG exports to non-free trade agreement countries. The U.S. is the global leader in LNG exports, with 14 billion cubic feet per day in current operating capacity and 48 Bcf/d in total authorizations, according to DOE estimates. While the suspension is expected to have no short- to medium-term impact on the EU’s energy security, it will hurt companies waiting to export LNG, especially to Europe, including Cheniere Energy and Sempra. Climate activists and youth groups have raised concerns about the potential surge in LNG exports, accusing the projects of polluting local communities and increasing reliance on fossil fuels.
